World AIDS Day at La Clínica del Pueblo: A Milestone in HIV Care

On Monday 2, to celebrate #WorldAIDSDay (December 1), La Clínica del Pueblo hosted HRSA, the White House Office of National AIDS Policy, and DC Health to announce incredible progress!

90.6% of people living with HIV receiving care through the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program are now virally suppressed — a groundbreaking achievement surpassing national rates. 🎉

🔑 Why this matters:

✅ Viral suppression means people living with HIV taking their medication cannot transmit the virus and can live longer, healthier lives.

✅ Over 576,000 people in the U.S. benefit from life-saving care, medication, and support services through this program.

✅ Nationwide, Latinos have experienced a 24% increase in HIV diagnoses from 2010 to 2022, contrasting with an overall 12% decrease across all populations. Latino men, particularly gay and bisexual individuals, represent most new diagnoses (88% in 2022).

La Clínica del Pueblo staff shared our model of care with HRSA Administrator Carole Johnson, White House Office of National AIDS Policy Director Francisco Ruiz, Laura Cheever, Associate Administrator, HRSA HIV/AIDS Bureau, Director of the District of Columbia Department of Health Ayanna Bennett, and community leaders for a World AIDS Day celebration event. Our guests had also the opportunity to meet Carlos Plazas, CEO of La Clínica del Pueblo, who shared insights on the organization’s commitment to equitable and compassionate HIV care and the importance of Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program funds to achieve this goal.

"At the Health Resources and Services Administration, the care and treatment we have continuously supported through our Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program over the last 34 years is making it possible for hundreds of thousands of people with HIV to live long, healthy lives," said HRSA Administrator Carole Johnson.

“Today’s record-breaking data highlight the impact of the Ryan White Program and underscore the vital role of the program to ensure no communities are left behind as we work towards ending the HIV epidemic.”

👥 Tailored to meet unique needs, the Ryan White Program goes beyond healthcare—addressing housing, transportation, mental health, legal services, and more to ensure patients can access and stay in treatment.

Let’s continue making strides to end the HIV epidemic together!
