On June 8, La Clínica del Pueblo will be awarded the UnidosUS 2018 LGBTQ Champion Award. This award is granted every year to an UnidosUS Affiliate organization with exceptional leadership and a commitment to the LGBTQ community, and this year it is recognizing La Clínica’s long history of exemplary work on behalf of the LGBTQ community on initiatives that promote equity, access to services, leadership development, and civic engagement.

Since serving our first HIV-positive patient in 1985, La Clínica has engaged and embraced the Latino LGBTQ community as part of our core mission of serving those most in need. Today, La Clínica works hard to ensure that our staff represent the diversity of the community we serve and has LGBTQ employees at all levels throughout the organization. We have developed many programs in collaboration with our patients over the years that speak to the specific health needs of gay and transgender Latinxs, particularly in the realm of HIV prevention and care. Through its service, La Clínica has gained a reputation of being a safe place where Spanish-speaking community members, immigrants, LGBTQ persons, and all can come to receive high-quality, compassionate care.

The award, given by UnidosUS in collaboration with The Human Rights Campaign, includes a $1,000 cash award and one complimentary registration to the 2018 UnidosUS Conference where La Clínica will be honored as the LGBTQ Champion Award winner.

UnidosUS, formerly the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), is the nation’s largest Latino civil rights and advocacy organization. Through its unique combination of research, advocacy, programs, and a national network of nearly 300 community-based Affiliate organizations across the country, it simultaneously challenge the social, economic, and political barriers that affect Latinos in the United States. Since its founding in 1968, UnidosUS has contributed to a stronger America by elevating the voice of Latinos, and defending and advancing our community’s concerns. Today, it remain steadfast in its mission to realize a day where all Latinos thrive and their contributions are fully recognized.

The award ceremony will take place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Washington DC at 5:30pm.
